At 44\, Sonia found herself facing a huge amount of personal and financial change. Her long-term relationship had come to an end\, her family was being split up\, and she had also been made redundant. With two children relying on her\, she suddenly had to think very differently about her future.\n\nFor the previous 14 years\, whilst working a 9–5 job as an Account Manager\, Sonia had also been doing a second role as “her indoors” for her ex-partner’s industrial roofing and cladding company\, running the back office and gaining first-hand experience of the construction industry and how a business operates.\n\nThen an opportunity presented itself.\n\nShe learned that an oak-framing company was about to go into administration\, potentially leaving a gap in the market across the South East. Sonia decided to back herself and go for it.\n\nWithin 24 hours of that conversation\, she had set up Southern Oak Ltd.\n\nShe didn't have years of experience as an entrepreneur\, nor did she have experience working with oak. What she did have was a natural entrepreneurial ability\, 14 years of experience\, an understanding of the industry\, an opportunity she believed in\, and the determination to back herself.\n\nFrom that decision\, Southern Oak has grown into an established specialist business delivering bespoke oak-framed garages\, porches\, outbuildings and architectural structures nationwide.\n\nNow\, Sonia is passionate about sharing the real story behind her journey and encouraging other women to recognise their own experience\, take opportunities when they arise and\, sometimes\, simply have the courage to realise that it is never too late to back themselves.\nHow to Register\n🎟️ To register please complete the booking form and email to Karen Sussex at ksussex@timberdevelopment.uk to book your place/s.\n\nThis event is intended as a dedicated forum for biological women working in\, or supporting\, the timber industry.
